About Massage Therapy
Massage is an age old practice, with records of its use going back to ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt and most of Asia. Massage was 'discovered' here in the west during the 19th century, by a Swedish physiologist, creating what we know as Swedish Massage.
Massage can help muscle injuries and strains, increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, help flexibility, promote relaxation, as well as assisting with an array of different pathologies.
Ben offers a range of modalities, including:
- Sports Massage
- Trigger Point Therapy
- Deep Tissue Massage
- Swedish Massage
What happens in a session?
After an initial conversation about your health, medical history, reason for the session, etc, an examination of your posture will follow, and in agreement with yourself discuss the best approach to treatment.
Depending on the nature of the treatment, varying levels of pressure will be used, either being light to quite firm, depending on your requirements.
Ben will also offer lifestyle advice, discussing ways in which you may be able to help yourself outside of the session.
Prior to studying massage, Ben worked in London in the finance industry. Although it met his needs materially, it did not fulfil his needs personally. Having resigned he spent some time abroad, and endeavoured to find something more satisfying. This turned out to be bodywork.
Ben trained in the Arizona School of Integrative Studies in the US, a massage school which takes a broad, holistic approach to its teachings, and aims to create Massage Therapists who can combine a wide array of techniques for what suits the client.
In Arizona Ben studied Sports massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Deep Tissue massage, Connective Tissue massage, Swedish, as well as learning basic elements of Cranial Sacral and some of the Asian modalities.
Rather than using one technique during a massage, he regularly blends different approaches dependant upon the clients needs. This is his strength and focus as a therapist. He also places a heavy emphasis on trigger points, as he finds these to be generally essential to any successful therapeutic treatment. Ben is a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists and regularly attends training courses to further expand his working knowledge. He is currently studying a vocational degree in Acupuncture.
